> Chairman's Report
I am delighted to welcome members and friends of the Canada – South Africa Chamber of Business to our 2007 Indaba.
Our two countries share a long history of partnership that encompasses public and private sector projects transcending many industries. 2007 has been another significant year for cementing these ties. Exploding growth in South Africa’s infrastructure development has highlighted three exciting examples of Canada – South Africa joint ventures – SNC Lavalin’s involvement in the pebble bed modular nuclear reactor at Koeberg; Bombardier’s participation in the Gautrain, a high speed rail link between Johannesburg, Pretoria and the OR Tambo international airport; and Alcan’s contribution to the vast aluminum smelter at Coega. These high-profile projects are a testament to the enormous and exciting opportunities for sharing skills and experience that contribute to both countries’ economic progress.
The Canada – South Africa Chamber of Business remains committed to facilitating further growth in these partnerships and to promote opportunities for stronger trade, investment and commercial ties between our two countries. To this end we enjoy and benefit from the willing support offered by South Africa’s High Commission in Ottawa and the Consulate General in Toronto.
I would like to thank Bruce Shapiro, our ever-enthusiastic and tireless President, each of our dedicated Board members and all of our generous sponsors and members for their assistance and encouragement during the past year.
Please enjoy our celebration this evening!
Peter Sacks, Chairman
